Naples, Italy

Postcard of Naples brought home by Jerome Epstein, Jr.

Jerome Epstein entered the European war through the port of Naples, arriving in Italy in January 1945. By this point in the war, Rome had already fallen and most of the attention and resources in the European theater had been diverted to France following the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6, 1945 (2 days after the capture of Rome). Still, out of both a desire to tie up German troops and pure inertia, the war in Italy continued, now reinforced by the 10th Mountain Division and Jerome Epstein, Jr.

Epstein discusses his time in Naples in two letters; in the first he is unable to disclose which city he is in due to censorship.
